Extended lesson
through ICT:
I made my class V
science yearly plan depending on the season as biology related lessons need the
season for flowering plants to bloom. I kept the physics part after midterm as
it doesn’t need season.
On 4th
September, I taught the topic ‘Series Connection’ in class V without
integrating ICT facilities, however after finding some of the videos on same
topic on YouTube, on 6th September, I re taught the same topic
as extended lesson. The lesson started with the recap of the same topic via
quiz through a tool called “Hot Potatoes” (this tool was recently emphasized by
our school IT teacher) followed by video screening.
It was one of the most
exciting lesson for my students of class V because of the full of ICT
integration. Therefore I will not write on how my lesson was so successful in
achieving lesson goals but rather analyze how students were engaged in my
lesson.
Students were found
very active and energetic throughout my lesson. They were overwhelmed when I
recaptured the lesson through quiz using “Hot Potatoes” tool. They were also
very observant and attentative when they watched YouTube lesson on how we
construct series and parallel connections using simulations. The classroom was
lively as students saw the electrons move through the wire. They learnt that
appliances like battery or cell can be connected in series or in parallel. If
appliances are connected in parallel, they offer low resistance to the flow of
current. If the appliances are connected in series, the amount of voltage
passing through each terminal will be same.
By watching the video
on series connection, students were able to know that, if one appliance breaks
down, others will also stop working. Hence at the end of the lesson when I
asked questions, students were able to answer all the questions correctly. As
such, I started to believe that ICT really plays a role in making our lesson
better and achievable.
With above statement I
could conclude my reflection on ICT integration in teaching learning process
with following pros followed by cons in general:
Advantages:
a. Children get
clear concept of the topic.
b. Work load of teacher
reduces when teaching through ICT.
c. Use of energizer
clips in between the lessons breaks their boredom.
d. Efficiency of learning increases
when activity instructions are on the screen.
e. Increases their curiosity
when teaching using ICT.
Disadvantages:
a. Limited resources make less
feasible to use ICT during teaching learning.
b. Transportation of
electronics from one class to another after every period is another hardship for the user as preparation consumes time.
c. Lack of
IT expertise.
In conclusion, my recommendation for our
education sector is, it’s the time to provide
b some formal professional training on ICT for teachers including IT teachers to
develop appropriate skills, knowledge, and attitudes regarding the effective use
of computers to support teaching learning process. This is because according to
Beggs (2000) as cited in Habibu et al. (2012) one of the top problems to teachers
‟ use of ICT in teaching was the lack of training.” Lacking in the knowledge and
skills of ICT; teachers are reluctant about the changes and incorporation of extra

Dear friends
ReplyDeleteDo help me with your valuable and realistic comments. Your comments will be my strength.
Its worth sharing, you have clearly pointed out the advantages and disadvantages of integration of ICT in teaching learning process.I have also observed similar thing while integrating ICT in lesson. You have also truly pointed out that lack of training on ICT for teachers are not willing to accept and adopt ICT in teaching.
ReplyDeleteThank you sir
ReplyDeleteGreat sir. Not only posting your blog, you have rightly mentioned advantages and disadvantages of integration of ICT skills and techniques in teaching learning process.
ReplyDeleteBut, if we make appropriate use of it, I sense mostly advantages than disadvantages, sir.
Nevertheless, keep going and make the changes in both teacher and students.
Very mindful sir. Firstly you year plan, you have planned mindfully. On top of that the integration of ICT (Hot poratoes). Last year we are also given a PD on this by our IT teachers, and some of us used this to conduct class test. It was time saving and easier as we dont need to use paper to print the question and we dont have to spent extra time to correct children's test papers.Nice idea that you shared in this forum.
ReplyDeleteYou have used ICT as a means to reteach your class V students about series circuit. Our students learn well and better not just by listening but by going along with the activities. Your presentation would have made them think better and see better. Great reteaching with more information input.
ReplyDeleteHot potatoes is interesting and students really enjoyed it.Keep it up sirji...
ReplyDeleteGood to go through your post. Video is always transformational tool to enrich teaching learning processes.
ReplyDeleteNice to go through your reflection with advantages and disadvantages. Hope everyone will be benefited from your reflection... Great job! Keep going
ReplyDeleteGood point raised in your article. You tube is one tool that can bring lots of changes to our daily life with proper guidance. It can also provide clear cut concept for our children while learning. Children can also discover many things after watching YouTube. Good keep on practising.
ReplyDeleteyou tube is one of the effective tools to be used in the classroom teaching. i also use it and i find it very effective.
ReplyDeleteYouTube! yes, you will get lot of educative and meaningful vedios. Its very effective tool and one can enrich teaching and learning from it. Hope children had learn from the your lesson . Keep exploring.
ReplyDeleteIt is really nice to see you teach without using ICT and with Ict. Your reflection clearly shows our children learn better with ICT use.Keep going.
ReplyDeleteThe word overwhelmed already convinces us that your lesson was a success sir.
ReplyDeleteGreat job sir.
Dear author
ReplyDeleteWorth sharing la. Any teaching which are related to simulation activities, children tends to learn better. Such topic can be taught through simulation. There are many other toipc we can teach through simulation such as like photosynthesis, pollination, fertilization, life cycle etc. But the problem is the lack of ict knowledge hinders our teaching. As you have suggested, if ministry could provide trainings it would be much beneficial to all of us.
I liked the advantages and disadvantages part of ICT.
ReplyDeleteWhat is hot potatoes...it seems new to us and if you could share about it in the next lesson it would help us to implement too. Seems interesting. ICT integrated lesson would be always better than traditional one for today's learner. You have explained clearly the advantages and disadvantages of ICT. Now I would suggest you to look for the advantage part and implement in your next teaching.
ReplyDeleteInformative sharing keep it up.You have done great job to make students learn actively with well set activities and classroom atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteWow, you tube is one of the effective tools to be used in the classroom teaching. But what have you used in the students level sir.
ReplyDeleteGood indeed...
ICT is very useful tool for teaching and makes teaching realistic. The way you have used ICT in your teaching is relevant and looks students reallly enjoyed the lesson.
